Temperature Indicators for Textile Manufacturing

In textile manufacturing, many processes like heat-setting and thermosol dyeing run at temperatures between 170 and 230 °C, and within a very tight tolerance. Temperature uniformity across the whole fabric is essential here and at the same time hard to control, since edges cool faster, causing defects and unwanted side-to-center variation. Irreversible temperature indicators deliver documentable proof that necessary thresholds were reached across the full fabric width, and within the required tolerance. They can therefore make a substantial contribution to QC, process validation and protection against claims.

What temperature does polyester heat-setting require, and how do you confirm the fabric reached it?

Depending on the specific polyester blend you are using, the documented temperature window for thermofixation sits between 170 and 220 °C. Whether the fabric actually reached the required peak temperature for setting is most easily confirmed by using irreversible temperature indicators for textiles, placed on the fabric itself. Once the fabric has reached the threshold marked on the indicator, the corresponding indicator point permanently changes color, which allows for accurate readings even considerable time later.

How do you tell whether the fabric was set within the right window - neither under-set nor scorched?

You confirm it by using multi-point indicator strips with your target temperature set in the middle of the range, bracketed by at least one threshold above and one below. This ensures that you can easily verify not only if your fabric reached the correct threshold, but that it also did not reach the next one on the indicator. By spreading the indicators across the full fabric width you can spot highs and lows in the pattern of heat distribution during production and confirm the setting temperature stayed within tolerance.

How do you achieve even shade in thermosol (continuous) dyeing, and what role does fixation temperature play?

The precondition for an even shade in thermosol is to reach a uniform fixation temperature across the full web of fabric, from edge to edge. Placing chemical-resistant textile indicators over the full working width — especially at the borders — lets you verify the peak temperature of the material during the dyeing process long after the run, since the indicators are irreversible.
