Temperature Indicators for Electrofusion Coupler & Fitting

What determines the strength of the connection in electrofusion welding is current and duration. But since the embedded heating coils are within the fitting, operators have to rely on measuring instruments in order to tell when the welding is complete. Irreversible temperature indicators provide a second, independent verification point. By measuring the external temperature of the electrofusion fitting, which is the result of correct current and time, the indicator confirms whether the fitting has reached the temperature threshold necessary to support a reliable and safe connection.

What temperature does the indicator actually confirm on the fitting — and what does it not prove?

The indicator only confirms the external temperature of the fitting, not the internal one. This means that an irreversible temperature indicator cannot replace the fusion unit's control and does not certify the joint itself. What it does do is provide an easy-to-read second point of reference documenting the temperature on the fitting. Usually temperature ranges on the outside of the fitting have to land between 60 and 72 °C, which corresponds to a correct current-and-time cycle for that fitting. This may vary depending on what fitting and pipe size you use.

Electrofusion fittings already have fusion-indicator pins — why verify the temperature too?

Pins provide reliable evidence of melt pressure, but they can only provide that evidence locally, which is why general temperature monitoring can give extra certainty that the fitting reached the external temperature which a correct cycle produces. Therefore they should be seen as complementary rather than competing technologies.

Does the same verification by temperature indicator apply to socket and butt fusion?

Yes, the same verification by temperature indicator can be applied to socket and butt fusion, but the indicator needs to be placed on the heater tool or heating plate respectively instead of the fitting element. In socket and butt fusion the indicator is therefore best used to verify whether the heating element has reached the necessary temperature threshold in order to melt the polyethylene (PE/HDPE) enough before joining.
